Long popular in Japan, the first sleep capsule hotel is now opened in Hong Kong. Situated right in Sheung Wan, SLEEEP provides a neat space for travellers and business professionals to lay their head over night at a lower cost than traditional hotels. It is also popular among the working class around Central to take a power nap during lunch time.
Founders Alex Kot and Jun Rivers first developed the SLEEEP concept in response to Harvard’s Dean Challenge asking for design proposals to address population challenges in urban environments. “Many busy Hong Kongers struggle with good sleep due to stress and packed schedules. They feel tired even though they have slept as they do not have quality sleep.” explained Alex. “We don’t just provide a space for sleeping, we provide an hi-tech environment that can promote deep sleep and recharge energy, which can then boost productivity”.
The minimalistic 367-square-foot space contains eight eco-friendly sleeping capsules called SLPer®. The SLPers is built with real wood lining and consist of smart lighting system that is designed to work with your body clock, while the air supply and climate controls inside the capsules are based on scientific findings, to give the guests the best quality sleep possible.
Sleeepers can personalise their beds, requesting a soft or firm mattress, thick or thin blanket or a memory foam or eco-down pillow upon booking online. We have gone and tried the sleep capsule out in person and the very comfortable bedding along with the soothing background music put us fast asleep very quickly. After an hour when the time was up, a soft red light came on just like a sunrise. “The soft light would induce your hormones and wake you up slowly” said Alex.
We were amazed at the power of a quality deep sleep, as we felt fully recharged afterwards. SLEEEP is a breathing space within a suffocating environment that shows the stressed working class nearby what a good sleep really is, and hence take them further in both their personal and professional lives.
You can book the capsule by hour (1,2,4,8,12 hours; from HK$149 to HK$499) or HK$599 per night.
